If any one of us were to be tempted to do this, one should use a straight bit with a top bearing. I'll bet that's what he was using because first he used his special chisel. That made room for the bearing which rides on either side of the teak channel. I also believe that the bit was ever so undersized.

You could probably check the Racor website, or just call them, however it should be easy to check it out yourself. Pull the top off the filter housing and note how high the old style filter you've been using sits, then drop a new style in and see if it changes. If not, you're good to go. I bet you'lll find your fine without the bushing.
