Battery monitor
Sat, Mar 28, 2009 4:32 PM
The product description mentions " a new shunt selection is available to measure currents up to 1000 amps respectively" When the 8 D's die I 'll probably go to golfcart batteries and add a separate main engine start battery (group 31 size) which I will then monitor instead of the genset battery.

Keith Live your life so that when you die, the preacher will not have to tell lies at your funeral. ________________ Thanks to Rich Gano, I learned something today. Groco has bronze nipples available from 1/2" to 4". I remember a thread about this months ago, but I can't remember if anyone ever posted a source for saltwater quality bronze nipples.

Battery cable replacement

So, I need a manageable crimper with die sets up to the largest size I have on my boat and some other sizes down to #8. Can all those be found to fit one tool? I have also used heat shrink tubing on most of my work but just off the shelf at the big box or Radio Shack. You guys are mentioning "adhesive" heat shrink. Is that different?

Air compressors on boats

Air tools we used regularly included die grinders, cut off wheels, and air powered 6" grinder/disc sander. Definately worth having aboard, and used frequently. (but never for inflating the dinghy--we had a high volume, low pressure electric pump for that!).

Accommodate or die. The unpleasant fact is, Garmin seems very slow to accommodate. I suspect the iPad market will stress Garmin's business models for customer responsiveness. I modified one die set to fit 4/0 cable and used it several times. I've seen several similar 16 ton hydraulic crimpers on e-bay for $30 prehaps worth the risk/buy. I also used the smaller dies to swage wire rope and that ok as well.

Thru-Hulls
Sun, Oct 14, 2018 6:33 PM
If you are working with the "older" all straight threaded thru-hulls, you can convert them to having the last 2-3 threads tapered just by using a tapered pipe die on them, a large enough wrench, and a little bit of muscle. Just make sure to match size and pitch. At least that's what Jill says after having just done so on a recent job.
