TWL: Wood boats
Sat, Mar 2, 2002 5:34 PM
Now, all you plastic boaters can move on--this question is for us die hard "woodie" owners. We have stripped all the paint off the bottom of Classy Lady (did it last fall), and now are preparing to recaulk seams & paint the bottom. Would like to have info on seam compounds.

If you argument is to believed, boats OVER 60 ft should be using CSC and the small boats should be using "the good stuff".( I just couldn't let this thread die a quite death) :-) ..jd Joe DellaFera / Margaret Murray 36' Prairie DC "Prairie Star" Pompano Beach, Fl. Re: TWL: ratchet crimper
Mon, Aug 5, 2002 6:28 PM
It requires the right type of fitting and the correct die for the crimper but the end result is fantastic without soldering. I found them at a high tech radio shop (West Lake Electronics in Seattle). It is not an inexpensive way to go and does not make sense for one or two installations. Willing to share the tool locally...

TWL: Re: Canvas Snap Fastener Tool

I bought one of these kits after years of fooling with the feeble hammer and die sets from the boating store. After you use this tool you will love working on canvas and will actyally hunt for loose or missing snaps on your existing canvas. (I did...)

TWL: Fuel Barge
Sun, Feb 1, 2004 6:38 PM
The south bay has no fuel docks as that is where boats go to die, most being slip-huggers. The barge carries 10,000 gallons of diesel and gasoline, charges more than the fuel docks charge, and does not have to pay a percentage of sales to the port authority as do the private fuel dock operators.

As Frank Burrows said, the Narrows Restaurant has seafood to die for. I have not had better "cream of crab soup" anywhere Period. Spots for anchoring could be: Dividing Creek off The Wye River; Leeds creek; Leadenham Creek; and in the Chester River: Off Cackaway Island, Corsica river and langford creek. A little sightseeing: Go to Chestertown.

Bosch 12 inch chop saw (however I saw a new laser guided Hitatchi that is to die for) 7. Miller XMT 304 CC/CV mig welder with 1 pound spool gun (you gotta have this on an aluminum boat) 8. Pair of Milwaukee mini grinders (usually one has a wire brush and one has a non-ferrous grinding wheel on it) Do we have to stop at eight? Safe Cutting and Drilling.

Awlcraft Discussion
Thu, Jan 26, 2006 1:34 PM
Here are his thoughts: Always use a kicker, allow enough flash time between coats to avoid die back or dull spots and allow at least 5 hrs before dew on horizontal surfaces... been there done that and I've got ten tee shirts... we color coat and then clear wet on wet and we buff whenever we want to after cure...Awlcraft 2000 paint holds up extremely well and
