A fuel barge has started operating in south San Diego bay, doing on-call
refueling. The south bay has no fuel docks as that is where boats go to die,
most being slip-huggers. The barge carries 10,000 gallons of diesel and
gasoline, charges more than the fuel docks charge, and does not have to pay a
percentage of sales to the port authority as do the private fuel dock
operators. Of course controversy abounds as both enviro you-know-whats, and
the port tax grabbers are having conniptions. The Coast Guard and Fish and Game
have inspected the barge and declared it safe, and that the barge is properly
insured and equipped. Our yacht club does not allow dockside refueling but I
guess some do. Is this a first or is this barge thing common in other parts of
the country?

For commercial operators this is very common in the oilfield here on the
Gulf of Mexico, and the Gulf ICW.

New Bedford, MA is a large commerical fishing port. A fuel barge is
used to service the
trawlers. I have never inquired about service of pleasure boats.
