TWL: computers
Thu, Dec 18, 2003 2:09 AM
I guess I just don't understand what is higher quality--are the components tested like Mil specs? I own seven computers--keep business, boating, internet photowork etc all separate--never had a computer failure--keep anti virius, clean the hard drives etc. Bob Austin

Oil specs
Fri, Sep 10, 2004 3:15 PM
MY Detroit Diesels recommend both Mil specs and API code with profuse numbering - egg CC/SC or Supplement 1 SB then again certain non multigrade synthetic oils are very good for them -- perhaps I shouldn't just pop down to NAPA and pick up any old SAE40??? I must start checking for trans fatty acids, saturated fat percentage etc? Anybody studied this?

You see them in MIL-STD-1553B systems, among others. Triax is also fairly common as a connector for "shielded twisted pair". There are also twisted pair inserts for the DB-25 sized shell (actually a quad pair with 4 inserts).

Re: [time-nuts] RFX GPSDO - Anybody played with one of these?

Raj, JLT just sent out a press release some days ago on the LC_XO sub 1 inch square GPSDO that is smaller and higher performance than the RFX unit, runs from only 3.3V, and it can be soldered into a 100 mil standard breadboard, and consumes only about 0.5W (RFX unit is probably >> 1W).

It's hilarious now, looking at the crude PC layouts, the PC cards that look like they were separated with hatchets (in reality, they used heavy-duty, office-type guillotine paper cutters), and the "definitely not near mil-spec" hand soldering job using at least 5x the optimum amount of solder.
