Oil specs

Having had some replies to my post about ATF for my BW Velvet drives- I
am pondering the mysteries of oils specs--- there must be some simple
idiot proof answers - there are so many codes. I have a feeling I don't
need to know 90% of it!

What for instance is the difference between Dexron II and III?

MY Detroit Diesels recommend both Mil specs and API code with profuse
numbering - egg CC/SC or Supplement 1 SB then again certain non
multigrade synthetic oils are very good for them -- perhaps I shouldn't
just pop down to NAPA and pick up any old SAE40???

I must start checking for trans fatty acids, saturated fat percentage
etc?

Anybody studied this? However I must admit it doesn't sound too exciting
bedtime reading :-).

Ron,
While I don't know the answer to all the questions about oil specs I did
find out that CC stands for compression combustion, I.E. diesels and SC=
spark combustion.
About all that does is mean that if I'm looking for something for the
Detroit I can forget anything that is SC rated only but that helps some.
