I have used consumer grade computers on boats for over 20 years. One of my
laptops did give up when it was 8 years old--4 of these had been at sea in a
sailboat--one of the letters on the keyboard would not work. I took it apart
and it worked for a few more months--then I scrapped it.
Frankly I like USB ports, Firewire ports, PMCIA connections, Network
connections, serial, parallel prots, plenty of RAM and a decent speed
processor, CD R/RW and at least 30 gig hard drive. I use more powerful
computers for high end graphic work--but again comsumer grade work well.
I guess I just don't understand what is higher quality--are the components
tested like Mil specs? I own seven computers--keep business, boating,
internet photowork etc all separate--never had a computer failure--keep anti
virius, clean the hard drives etc.
