With a hacksaw and appropriately sized threading die, you can easily make replacement rods with brass rod purchased locally. Stainless steel rod can also be used. I've done both without any long term detrimental effects. I believe that the tie rod in your unit is 1/4 inch.

This is partly caused by a check valve in the line which I use to prevent pump cycling (until the batteries die) (yes I agree they can not be used in lieu of a discharge loop). To remedy the air lock I drilled a very small hole (1/8") in the output flange not covered by the hose. I'm happy with this set up.

I haven't had any of my 5071A die yet. Doug - can you tell us how long your first 5071A tube lasted? As for shelf-life, you can read about the official way to store and periodically pump them. But I'm quite certain that many of us have surplus units that probably haven't been powered for years and some of them end up working fine. /tvb

We did ship some boards with rows of 150pF SMT capacitors on register select inputs of an IDT bit-slice ALU due to a die shrink that made the internal registers get corrupted with fast incoming edges. Talk about analog solutions to digital problems! --David Forbes
