I have a Perko 493 strainer. I think I read here of some alternate repair
ideas. The 4 tie rods are $100+. Can I buy bronze rod & thread it to replace
the stock rods?

Ed, the OEM tie rods in the Perko strainers are brass (Groco, too). With a hacksaw and appropriately sized threading die, you can easily make replacement rods with brass rod purchased locally. Stainless steel rod can also be used. I've done both without any long term detrimental effects. I believe that the tie rod in your unit is 1/4 inch.
While you are at it, replace the drain plug in the bottom plate with a stainless steel plug purchased at a local plumbing supplier. If need be, drill out the old plug and retap with a pipe tap of the appropriate size. If you need to, you can retap with a straight tap and use a straight threaded plug, but you'd need to use a sealant on the threads.
While you've got the strainer apart, might as well think about replacing the gaskets also.
