Measuring the temperature would be the most power hungry operation, I would suspect... but fortunately that doesn't have to be done all that often, perhaps once per minute. After the temperature is measured, a lookup table can be used to find a second by second correction value to be added to the seconds counter.

The advantage of off-chip timekeeping is the low power consumption of dedicated RTC chips that makes them able to run from a coin cell forever. If you have a GPS receiver or worse, an OCXO or a Rubidium, low power at that level cannot be a serious concern.

Re: Power and heat re: Heathkit WWV clock / where are the good oscillators?

The oscillator and first divider stages are pretty much all there is. Past that it just gets slower and slower as you go down the divider. Analog watch modules ( so a 32 KHz crystal driving a stepper that moved hands) could run for a year on the coin cell battery in the watch back in the 1970’s. The LCD versions …. not so much.

Something like: include include nut("M4") { attach(TOP) tube(id=4, wall=1, h=2) { attach(TOP) top_half() sphere(d=6); } }  - Revar > On Jun 5, 2023, at 5:47 AM, Karl Exler wrote: > > Dear all!

Spot checking it against the NIST website throughout the day, I can't visually see any difference in the edge of the second. Very happy with it so far. But I probably will do a no sync test some time. Leaving it in a metal box away from a window at night sounds quite reasonable and easy to set up. I'll do it for a week and see what happens.

Hurricanes no doubt affect them all - but have been doing so for millenia.  Big hurricane seasons tend to be "good" for Nearctic vagrants in western Europe.
