Most pleasure craft diesels seem to die, not wear out, after about 20 years from what I have seen. Corrosion, disuse, lack of maintenance and abuse eventually kill the engine. These engines could certainly be rebuilt, but it is often not economical to do so.

It's like a incandescent light bulb: They can run for decades if continuously under power, but if you switch them on and off once a day, they die within a few months. Also, Rb are spec'ed for a lifespan in the order of 20 years (the PRS10 has a lifespan of 27 years).

I think though, that the marketplace is driving towards increased functionality on one chip, with bigger die size. Those of us who want 50 gates at medium or low speed are distinctly in the minority.
