I am looking at purchasing a Spade anchor to use as my primary on our 41'
Defever. Does anyone have any comment on them? We also have a 45# CQR. We are
from eastern NC and will cruise to FL and the Bahamas and I am trying to
narrow down a good choice or combination.
Any suggestions or comments appreciated.

Phil,
On my present boat I am using a 35 lb Delta "Fast Set" as my
primary anchor and have yet to have it fail to set the first time, every
time, in various bottoms from SW to the Bahamas and back.  As secondary I
carry a 21 lb Fortress and a 35 lb Danforth.  However, on my previous
vessel which was a 42' Ketch, I utilized a 45 lb CQR as primary and can
only recall difficulty in setting it in heavy grass covered bottoms,
sometimes taking two or three attempts.  However, once set I never
experienced drag using the CQR so wonder why you apparently seem
uncomfortable using the CQR as your primary?

OK, with all these different types of anchors being discussed, I want
to know what kind of anchors I have!  I can describe them, but what I'd
really like is to find a single source with descriptions and pictures
of all the types (or at least, all the more common, more popular ones).

Any ideas?

Yes, first place I would look would be in a W. Marine or Boat U/S catelog,
almost everyone has one of these?

I'm using a Spade S-140 on my Krogen 42. I ordered a S-100, but wasn't
comfortable with the size ( I usually like a size larger than suggested
anyway). It has held perfectly in the mud we have around here on the upper
Texas Gulf coast. It seems to take a bit longer to set than a Fortress,
which has been my go-to anchor for years. I'm still in the experimentation
stage with this, but I'm very happy so far. I understand it works even
better in sand bottoms.

One thing to keep in mind. The site recommends that you use a steel or ss
version as your primary anchor, leaving the aluminum ones to situations
where handling needs to be considered. The light weight of the aluminum ones
seems to adversely affect their performance a bit.

I purchased mine from Glenn Ashmore, a boater who decided to buy these
things by the palletload from Tunisia. Very satisfied and got a better price
than West Marine:
