Re: [time-nuts] Quiet clocks, noisy clocks

I have a DS3231 on a breakout board with its own coin cell keep-alive battery on the breakout board. I was messing with it and a BeagleBone about a year ago. I needed the BeagleBone for the ES100 experiments, so took both out of the drawer for the first time over Christmas holidays. Linux on the BBB tells you the last time you logged in.

poken words that are so much of the total communications package. Bob is also on the mark concerning the fact that not all of the information placed on the list is correct. As in navigation, the prudent person will often wish to verify critical matters with a second source, prior to acting on the information. I have carried on a number of personal correspondences with Arild and Garrett for this purpose. Having said all of this, I don't post very often, but I keep a thick skin when I do post. -- Nick Meloy 44' Custom Trawler "Serendipity" mulatfl@pcola.gulf.net (850) 994-6165

f my "Shooting from the Lip" post was primarily to ask that we cease and desist from cutting one-liners. They add nothing to the discourse and take a lot away from the List. I've already had about a dozen private e-mails from lurkers indicating this is one of the reasons they hesitate to participate. Over-sensitive? Maybe. But as one of them described it, no one wants to be "publicly undressed" for ignorance, and it's not easy to know when you meet whatever the TWL standard is. Folks, there is no standard. And that brings me to your comment about the accuracy - or not - of information on TWL which I'll cover in a separate post. Cheers, Garrett

>> I started to privately send Garrett a concurrence, but thought possibly someone else may find food for thought in the following: I generally accept that most posts begin with an untyped "In My Humble Opinion" caveat. Kinda like "Caveat Emptor" - buyer beware, or "YMMV" - your mileage may vary. Still, I think those who post present the best information they may have on the given subject. Some subjects are very subjective, such as "the best anchor" and are therefore based upon opinions as much as concrete facts, while others are objective, such as the depth over the sill of a lock is x feet. But even the objective subjects have room for variations of fact and opinion, especially those that can, in fact vary. What may have been true at one point in time may not be true at a later point. In addition, many "accepted truths" on one coast may not be accepted as even half true on the other, or what works in cold climates may not hold for warm climates and vice versa. As long as a poster presents his honest opinions based upon facts as he sees them or his personal experience, there should be no problem and he should never be flamed upon. That does not mean someone cannot/should not disagree with him, but that disagreement should always be presented with proper decorum. I will add; however, that there are a (very) few vocal folks on the list who seem to delight in using inane comments to ridicule folks who have posted something to the list. After reading some of those comments, my opinion of the folks who post them drops to such a level that I often just delete their posts because their opinion/input has become inconsequential to me. We all come in various levels of experience and knowledge, patience and time. I think we could benefit from a wider range of posters to this list, not just the small number of experts on various subjects who seem to field 90% of the questions. A discussion is more interesting to me than a question, followed by -the- answer. Mark Richter, Winnie the Pooh __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Check out Yahoo! Visiting a modern crystal factory (was: Vintage Quartz Crystal Manufacturing)
Sun, Sep 25, 2016 2:00 PM
Apropos: I would very much like to visit a modern crystal factory. Is there a chance that any of the listening time-nuts have contacts to such a plant and would be willing to help in such an endavour? Attila Kinali -- It is upon moral qualities that a society is ultimately founded.

As I have mentioned in another thread, 10 Hz is a value being used for many telecom systems. In reality the value can be moved around. "jitter" and "wander" is just like "flutter" and "wow" terms coined a little from how they where perceived for different effects, but they all relate to phase variations.

The other side of the coin is that if you learn something new about oscillators and their behavior and the supporting electronics circuitry then $500 is a cheap educational seminar .
