e this bird the space it needs to find food. If there is a large group of people, it would be better to stay near the parking area. When groups of people stay just past the info sign in the grass by the river they have gotten excellent views of the bird by the ledge. Like any other bird, if people spread out and crowd the area, then the bird is pushed away and hides out of sight for longer periods of time. I have watched this bird everyday since Sunday and it is usually easy to see, with some intermittent periods of 15-30 mins before it returns. A little patience is needed. If it stays through the weekend I am hoping that crowds do not overwhelm it. Bird. Eat. Sleep. Repeat. Dan Rottino East Haddam

't ever find out if you like it if you don't try. That is also why I made the point that you should start out small. Do short, easy, good weather trips. Don't set yourself up to fail. It is supposed to be fun! The reality of cruising can be far different than the dream, that is why all potential cruisers need a reality check. The best reality check is to get the boat away from the dock. Start the motor and go. Even if it is for a couple of hours at a time, then build perhaps to an over nighter at a marina and then anchor out. Experience really is the best teacher. For me personally, getting out of my "comfort zone" is important, otherwise I might as well sit in front of the TV with a beer. For others a trip to the dock is enough. After all as the water rat said in Wind in the Willows, "there is nothing better than messing about in boats". Some one else said, "be not so afraid of dying as of not living". -- Dolph and Beverly McCranie M/V The Right Whale (KK 48 Whaleback)

of the people I referred to ever took time off from getting the boat ready to learn about seamanship and find out if they liked cruising. Consequentially they got a big surprise, and wasted a lot of money and time. Start small, but you don't have to own a boat, chartering is a good way to get the necessary skills and understanding. Also chartering a boat is considerable cheaper than owning a boat if you use it less than 6 weeks a year. You have a boat where ever you want it and you don't have to worry about the odd hurricane coming through. Like you I know people who are so afraid of dying that they quite living. I know one person who died when she was 32, she just didn't lay down. By the way, The name of my boat, Bird of Time, comes from the Rubaiyat. Come Fill thy cup and in the fire of spring Your winter garment of repentance fling For the Bird of Time has but a little way to flutter and the bird is on the wing. Omar and I saw eye to eye on many things. Don Dodds

Fwd: Recent threads regarding visiting Canada
Sat, Aug 25, 2007 5:49 PM
Our experiences while cruising in the Untied States have been 99% positive and we've enjoyed all the places we have visited but most particularly the people. We have always been treated with respect, patience and gentle humour...(Yes, that's not a typo...it's how we spell humor in Canada!)
