While on the trip down from Sault Ste Marie we had an alternator die, so my son ran up to the auto parts store and bought an automotive battery charger. Plugged her into the 120v system and the starter battery. Then whenever we had 120v (genset or shore power) the starter batter was charging. So in that case the genset was used as a backup system.

The windlass motor has begun to slowly die. This is a Simpson Lawrence Horizon 900 used on a Gulfstar 43. Naturally it died during the trip back from NC to Florida in the middle of the night with 120 feet of chain paid out...the boat had to be moved a couple of times due to high winds and 8 foot tidal movements. Thought I would have a heart attack!!

They could not figure out what could have made them die, even continuos discharge over the 2 months in the yard they say should not have destroyed them. They actually didn't believe they were bad. I returned them to their distributor in Annapolis MD and they gave me a $800 credit on the new 6 volts.

Your experience is one situation which points out the potential value of separate battery banks for twin screw boats....hopefully banks purchased at different times don't die simultaneously... Especially if you are the person who believes that the engine mounted fuel filter should normally die of old age, and not due to clogging.... Now, we are talking $$$$ and some added complexity. But, IMHO, Racors are considered the norm, the Cadillac, the in-line filtering system all others appear to be compared against.
