TWL: Florida East Coast marinas - recommendations please?
Tue, Aug 14, 2001 2:27 PM
However there is an "intangiable assets tax" on certain types of investments which is one mil. There is legislation to decrease the impact of this tax--and I am not certain if it has passed and been signed into law. If you have not owned the boat for more than 6 months/and not paid sales tax you may be liable for Florida sales tax.

I was discussing it with a friend of mine in Mil. Intel. here in The Great North. I thought I would pass it along as a perspective if anyone was interested. It is generally available knowledge. He wrote... ........."saw a brief explanation of the AIS transponders the other day.

He mentions that 5 mil Cor Ten is stiff enough and stable enough when welded to be used for small boats, say under 35 feet. Capt. Mike Maurice Wilsonville, Oregon (Portland)

ice eaters & storm windows

I used 40 mil transparent vinyl (same as for drop down type side curtains) inside, with a canvass button in the upper corners. I stuck on velcro strips and stapled it to the vinyl to hold the upper edge.

The most severe use for this is clear greenhouse film, which is maybe 4-6 mils thick and is expected to stand up to sunlight for as long as possible. The best UV stabilizer is carbon black. It's degraded about as far as it can go, and is very opaque, which limits the UV exposure of the plastic to the very outer layer(s) of the synthetic.

You should follow DD recommendations by using a 40 weight oil like URSA that meets mil spec 2105E (E is the latest, I think). Many other brands meet DD specs as well. These are wet liner engines so it's best to use the recommended antifreeze, maybe its spec TP329 or something very similar.

The guy that was talking about heat may have been thinking about thin films, say in the 2-4 mil range (0.002 - 0.004") but that doesn't apply to ropes. I used to work with a lot of this stuff, and the hardest thing to stabilize are these clear films as used in greenhouses, etc.

Re: T&T: Hydraulic Steering Update

spec MIL H5606C. Of course, Seastar Hydarulic Fluid is one of them, and I found a litre bottle of it at NAPA. It also states, as you note, that "auto transmission fluid Dexron II may be used in an emergency", and that "in an extreme emergency any non-toxic, non-flammable liquid may provide temporqry steering".

Trojan battery Terminals

Corrosion could certainly be a factor, i do keep my terminals clean and my powder dry too, but if you look at the total conductor area availble passing current from the lead casting into the 1/2inch hex head of a stainless bolt, its not much area (ie circular mils in another measure) to transfer current.
