The adult Mew Gull was relocated today in a field adjacent to Conc. Rd. 1
just east of Chatham-Kent Rd. 1 at about 2:30 this afternoon.
We had been looking for the bird since yesterday afternoon diligently
checking Hillman Marsh and Wheatley Harbour and even trying the tip at
Pelee. We had seen a few nice birds, like a Snowy Owl in a field north of
Mersea Rd. D (Onion Fields), Snow Geese & Tundra Swans (Hillman), Glaucous,
Iceland and Little Gulls in various spots. By mid-afternoon today we were
coming to terms with going home without see the Mew Gull when Ian Platt,
Joan Taylor and their friend Heather showed up at Wheatley. Ian mentioned
having seen some gulls in a field nearby. When we said that we had checked
the harbour they went to try this field. As we were on our way home we
followed. When we pulled in behind them they seemed a bit excited. Joan had
spotted the Mew Gull in the field south of Conc. Rd. 1 opposite five
identical
blue buildings. Scopes were brought to into play and the identification
confirmed. Just as we had our fill the bird flew to the north, possibly into
a much larger field with many more gulls. We tried to relocate the bird for
a short time but could not. One dedicated searcher was left behind.
Directions: From Wheatley go south on Chatham-Kent Rd. 1. Before reaching
the harbour turn left on Conc. Rd. 1 and scan the fields.
