The vertical post on top your boat, probably with a radar on top, is a "mast". The Skipper Bob book for the NY Canals is available at the Waterford Visitors Center. Be sure you have this year's edition, though the bridges have not changed in a very long time.

If these problems do exist for your situation, there are a couple of easy solutions to both. To manage the load, a gin pole - any aluminum tube strong enough to handle the compression loads - about 3/4 the length of the mast can be stepped in the mast's tabernacle.
