If your air draft is 18.5, then you are just fine. A "boom" is a horizontal beam, usually attached to a mast. The vertical post on top your boat, probably with a radar on top, is a "mast". The Skipper Bob book for the NY Canals is available at the Waterford Visitors Center. Be sure you have this year's edition, though the bridges have not changed in a very long time.
