Re: T&T: thru-hull replacement

Rather than "unscrew" them, the mechanic used a cutting burr on an air die grinder to grind the inside of the mushroom flange (from outside the boat) which then allowed the flange to fall off. We, then, could easilly remove the remaining threaded shank and nut from inside the boat. This made for a quick and easy job without damage to the hull.

Line squalls which come up very quickly also die out quickly and rarely develop the fetch for big seas. Storms which do develop larger waves also signal their coming well in advance. I have been in 8 footers in Lake Huron but I also had plenty of warning and got to shelter within an hour of the conditions getting rough.

Re: T&T: Boating Accidents in the News

A person did die in a collision between two vessels; and a boat did run aground in another incident. I would hardly call it a conviction to say that somehow the developing situation leading to a collision or a grounding must have resulted from insufficient "looking out" or to use the more formal terminology "maintaining a look-out".

It's worthwhile noting that New Hampshire ("Live Free or Die") has implemented a policy charging people for the cost of their rescue (see http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/10/29/national/main5451330.shtml for an example).

By your definition, you are as likely to die mowing the lawn as you are operating your boat. The lawn mower could sling out a rock that ricochets of a wall that sends it back into your head an you're dead. A line could snap on your boat and whip back and take off your head and your dead.

Ethanol in Outboard Gas-what to do
Wed, Jan 6, 2010 12:38 PM
If I were pull the start cord this minute the engine would start but would die if I gave it any throttle. My options are to haul it to the dealer, remove the carb and take it to the dealer, have someone come to the boat or attempt this myself. I can do any of these but in another few months I think I will be right back in the same position.
