The discussion of ethanol in gas and what it does to small outboard carbs is
near and dear to my heart. I have had my 8 hp Yamaha cleaned twice in the
last two years. This is an 80 lb. hassle that no one would choose, not to
mention the $$. And if twice in two years was not enough to keep it fresh
in my mind, the problem exists this very day. If I were pull the start cord
this minute the engine would start but would die if I gave it any throttle.
My options are to haul it to the dealer, remove the carb and take it to the
dealer, have someone come to the boat or attempt this myself. I can do any
of these but in another few months I think I will be right back in the same
position.
I can accept that running pure gas could be the only true fix. As said by
other posters, Stabil may or may not be effective enough, running the gas
out of the carb may not work and running the outboard once or twice per week
is not something I can do. The dealer recommends putting a water separator
in the fuel line but I have gotten mixed reviews of this also.
So, what do you think is the solution other than pure gas? I must admit, in
my heart of hearts, I am starting to have doubts about pure gas unless the
motor is run frequently.
