When you'd pull out a roll of bounties, the top third would look bad; you could see how far the stuff had migrated. Over a period of time, it cleaned up the tanks. When I repowered Cigano, I had new tanks built with separate suction and return for engines and fuel polishing. Engine suction is about 3/4" from bottom; transfer/polishing is at 1/4".

Go to David Pascoe's website here: http://www.yachtsurvey.com/ If you have the time, read everything but, most especially, read the article on bilge pumps. Pumps generally are flow rated at zero head. Each foot the water is lifted reduces flow. For Cigano, I used the tables in DP's article and handicapped the pumps accordingly.
