Fw: Discharge Lines

Go to David Pascoe's website here: http://www.yachtsurvey.com/  If you have
the time, read everything but, most especially, read the article on bilge
pumps. Pumps generally are flow rated at zero head. Each foot the water is
lifted reduces flow. For Cigano, I used the tables in DP's article and
handicapped the pumps accordingly. I installed 3 x Rule 3700's as emergency
pumps with a Rule 1100 as a general workhorse and maintenance pump. Still
thinking about adding another big AC bilge pump.

"..Get a bigger pump.  Anybody ever had one too big?.."

I agree...no such thing as too large or too many bilge pumps....One per
bilge
section is ideal....

On a related issue, every so often, maybe once or twice a season,  aboard
my
1972 Hatt YF I'd find water forward either in my forward shower
sump...when
the switch didn't activate...occasionally up forward in the bilge....????

After I put on PVC spray rails outside it happened more frequently....Now
what???

I finally realized that the shower sump discharge was at the water line
just
below the spray rails....Looped up maybe 18 inches higher inside....but
one
rough day when I had someone along to steer I checked it out: big waves
would
push water up the discharge loop (aided by the spray rail) and water would
pour briefly into the shower sump...So I put in a check valve....
