Boats, investment or not?
Mon, Sep 27, 2004 2:38 PM
My wife and I have owned over a dozen boats through the years and they all have contributed richly to our lives. Our son is an avid fisherman, boat owner and top-notch windsurfer. He grew up around boats and water and I know that the experience has helped mold him into the fine man he has become.

They installed all new nozzles, pressure tested the system, and rebuilt the pull box. Total cost was $638.28. Seemed like a good deal to me, especially since they also weighed and signed off half a dozen other extinguishers I had on board. I decide to remove the trim, paint almost all of the panels a nice white, and then refinish and reinstall the trim. Yes, it's a different look (more "Herreschoff" than "Taiwan Trawler") but I found that it brightened the cabins substantially. I also painted some of the mahogany doors.

The locks usually take 45 min to 1 hour to get in and get out if all goes well. But if there are tows, they have priority and the wait can be, though not usually, up to three hours. We ran into a problem with a lock door that took the lockmaster 8 hours to get us through at one lock.

It was built in with only 2 small grills at the top of the cabinet that it was in (approximately four 2 1/2" dia holes under the grills). When I put the new unit in I added lots of air circulation both at the top of the cabinet, behind it and to one side. We have never used the unit to make ice in the small cube trays that came with it.

Gee, having a boat that needs heat is the other side of the coin ;-) I think if one is re-wiring or have a new boat built they should consider where that boat might go in the long term, warm and/or cold water. Not having Aircon in some areas makes a boat very unwelcome to many people. Same as not having heat when the high is 45f.
