Dan, I just abandoned a West marine automatic bilge pump that failed after
a year. I was a fairly expensive one at about $90 for 1100 gph, but
couldn't handle something in my bilge. I didn't particularly like the
continual cycling that they make. Instead of turning on when there is a
certain water level, they turn on for a couple seconds to determine if there
is water to pump. This time, I have tried the internal float type, because
of the tight space next to a much larger high level, emergency pump.

- This time, I have tried the
internal float type, because
I thought about this one, but if it is the same type
of model I looked at, the switch is enclosed within
the unit itself. If a piece of crud gets into it,
seems like it would be awful difficult to get this
thing apart and cleaned in a hurry.

Another vote for great luck with the "Ultimate Bilge Pump Switch" with the
built in alarm. Doesn't require any maintenance and it has performed
flawlessly for 7 years.
Looks like most people are happy with their automatic bilge pumps also.

Frank, please give me the name and model number of the item you so
highly praise. I would not think of going to my local marine store
and ask for a thing called the "Ultimate Bilge Pump Switch as
described by Frank Burrows on the internet." But I DO want to buy
one!
And please no reference to West Marine - we don't have them up here
in Canada.

As we have all heard on the list, the older two cycle Detroit Diesels can
be leaky, drippy, slobbering and generally dirty beasts. Yes, they are also
light weight, powerful, smooth, cheap and easy to rebuild with parts
everywhere and a pair of them are already attached to Skooch.
At least two companies make special Crankcase enclosed systems to help stop
or retard many of these maladies. The most famous for these contraptions is
Walker Engineering and the Walker Air SEP. I found out that Racor (the fuel
filter folks) also have a closed crankcase system.
For my 4-53 naturals the Walkers are $750 each and the Racor versions are
$375.
Anybody know anything about these contraptions.

No West Marine in Canada ay!
George:
They make a junior and a senior and (not due to my age) I have the senior
which has a built in alarm circuit separate from the switch. The company
who makes the thing is Ultra Marine and they have a website at
http://www.hitechresales.com/ultrasafety/ Their physical info is 3755
Fiscal Court, Riviera Beach, Florida 33404 Tel: (561) 845-1086
1-800-433-2628 Fax: (561)844-8566
They have a Canadian Distributor named West Bay Sonship at 604-946-8682.
They also make an external alarm box that has two 9 volts to power the
alarm so the alarm circuit is completely independent of the ships 12 Volt
supply.

I installed a set on the boat last year. For no other reason then to be
able to tell some good "J. Foley" stories. No, just kidding. I didn't
know any better, who to deal with not weather or not to buy them... For
$1600.00 I got all the pieces needed to fit them on the engines (T/Perkins
T-6354) Easy job. Within a day's run I noticed that the engine room
smelled clean and my oil consumption was down. (about 1/2) I just figured
out that I will have to run the engines long enough to burn 1000 qt. of oil
before I break even. I like them but I don't know if I would do it again.
Hard to justify the expense to Margaret, but I have a rule to cover this
type of problem. It's "don't tell, don't ask". (who said there are no
good ideas coming out of the Federal Government?)...jd

I investigated and then decided against Airseps for my 8v53s. Cost was to
be about $1500 for a pair from Foley. They are very helpful and provide
lots of info to aid in installation. If I had a newer boat, with a clean
engine room, I'd definitely install Airseps on Detroit 2 strokes. In my
case, the cost was difficult to justify for my older boat, run for 30 years
without them. My boating habits (100 hours/yr) just didn't justify them. If
repowering in a newly refinished engine room or if I was cruising
seriously, I would definitely spend the money for them.
