Colleagues,
Sorry to send you yet another high priority message.
I am attaching my tally of the votes for the 2017 Literacy Leadership Awards.
Our winners are
-
Rosa DeLauro
-
Steve Reder
-
Sharon Darling
-
The ATLAS program
I have two questions for you, one easy and one hard:
-
Easy: Joel Packer is a very close 5th in the voting. Do we want to go ahead with an award for him?
-
Hard: Senator Cochran has just signed on as a cosponsor of the Senate AEFL Week resolution, which will be introduced tomorrow morning. I take your objections based on his voting record very seriously. However, because of the sign-on, and because I have been in touch with his office to obtain info for the nomination, and because we now have actually succeeded in getting his attention, I feel that we should recognize him in some way. I am wondering whether you would be willing to have a few of us go to his office for a separate thank-you presentation (not a Literacy Leadership award per se). I'd appreciate your thoughts on that.
Please send in your responses to these two questions asap.
Thanks!
Deborah

Deborah (and all),
I like this list of four very much, and I agree with the sentiment on our call last week that over four awards is too long a program. As the person who nominated Joel, I would support leaving him off and keeping it at four. Seeing how we will be having the fight of our lives next year over the FY 2019 appropriations, we could consider nominating Joel next year, along with his NDD United co-chairs, for founding that coalition and for (hopefully) their successful defense of NDD funding next year.
I also don't think there is a problem with some separate low-key recognition for Sen. Cochran's help.

We give them a time limit every year. At least I did. It's typically ignored. Last year we knew would be tough. Mr. Hinojosa was always terrible about going on too long. Believe it or not, his speech for us last year was actually one of the shortest I've ever heard him deliver!

Bear in mind that the start/end time for the awards sometimes has to accommodate members' schedules. In addition to Delauro, if (hopefully) our caucus co-chairs attend, they'll also need to speak, so that's three member schedules we'll need to juggle.

We can try, Tom. We can start giving awards at 5:30 and tell each recipient that they can speak for 4 minutes max.

Can we keep the award ceremony to a certain time limit? Wasnât that the issue last year?
I like the idea of a separate presentation at his officeâ¦
Thanks.,

Subject: [NCL Board] Literacy Leadership Awards: Results, Response Needed
Colleagues,
Sorry to send you yet another high priority message.
I am attaching my tally of the votes for the 2017 Literacy Leadership Awards.
Our winners are
- Rosa DeLauro
- Steve Reder
- Sharon Darling
- The ATLAS program
I have two questions for you, one easy and one hard:
1. Easy: Joel Packer is a very close 5th in the voting. Do we want to go ahead with an award for him?
Thanks!
Deborah
