Literacy Leadership Awards: Results, Response Needed

Okay, we have a go on the separate event. I'll create a separate announcement about that for posting on our website after we release the award winners' names.

Speaking of award winners, all of you have voted in favor of Joel except for Jeff, who makes a persuasive argument for deferring his award until next year. Are you all willing to go with Jeff's recommendation?

Deborah (and all),

I like this list of four very much, and I agree with the sentiment on our call last week that over four awards is too long a program. As the person who nominated Joel, I would support leaving him off and keeping it at four. Seeing how we will be having the fight of our lives next year over the FY 2019 appropriations, we could consider nominating Joel next year, along with his NDD United co-chairs, for founding that coalition and for (hopefully) their successful defense of NDD funding next year.

I also don't think there is a problem with some separate low-key recognition for Sen. Cochran's help.

Colleagues,

Sorry to send you yet another high priority message.

I am attaching my tally of the votes for the 2017 Literacy Leadership Awards.

Our winners are

  • Rosa DeLauro

  • Steve Reder

  • Sharon Darling

  • The ATLAS program

I have two questions for you, one easy and one hard:

  1. Easy: Joel Packer is a very close 5th in the voting. Do we want to go ahead with an award for him?

  2. Hard: Senator Cochran has just signed on as a cosponsor of the Senate AEFL Week resolution, which will be introduced tomorrow morning. I take your objections based on his voting record very seriously. However, because of the sign-on, and because I have been in touch with his office to obtain info for the nomination,  and because we now have actually succeeded in getting his attention, I feel that we should recognize him in some way. I am wondering whether you would be willing to have a few of us go to his office for a separate thank-you presentation (not a Literacy Leadership award per se). I'd appreciate your thoughts on that.

Please send in your responses to these two questions asap.

Thanks!

Deborah
