TRIMBLE NETRS

Good morning everyone.
I wanted to ask you some questions. I have a Trimble Netrs receiver. I
connect to the serial port to set a static IP address. Everything seems to
be working fine, but in the end, the IP address remains set to DHCP and I
can't change it. Can anyone help me?
Thanks everyone.

Hi

The “easy way” to deal with a NetRS is to go in through the web interface. Log in to
the address that DHCP has assigned. From the main page:

Internet => Ethernet => click “Modify”

Should get you to the page that lets you disable DHCP and switch to static.
Once that is changed, you will have to point your browser at the new address.

Set your router to assign a fixed IP address with DHCP. Most DHCP servers will allow you to enter the MAC address and have that MAC address always assigned a fixed IP address rather than a random assignment from the address pool.

Hi Bob
Thanks for the reply. The problem is that I can't connect to the web page
because NetSR uses DHCP, but with an IP address of 0.0.0.0, a net mask of
255.255.255.0, and a gateway of 0.0.0.0. It allows me to change it from
DHCP to static via the serial port, but in the end, nothing changes. It
always stays on DHCP with an IP address of 0.0.0.0.
I wanted to know if there's a trick to fix the problem. I've already reset
it both from the power button and the serial port, including clearnv, then
reset, but nothing changed.
For clarity, I'm sending you a Putty screenshot showing the situation.
To access the serial port, I used Putty. I also tried Termite on different
computers, but the result is always the same. I've been working on it for a
week, but I can't solve the problem.

Thank you very much.

Hi

If your DHCP is assigning 0.0.0.0, i”d fix that. If it’s assigning something else and
the NetRS ignores it that would fit with the other things you are seeing.

If this was my NetRS, the next step would be to re-flash the memory card. Pull the covers
off and it’s right there plugged into the end of the PCB. Twist a simple metal clasp and it
unplugs from the socket. I do this on any NetRS I’m trying to get running.

They use a pretty normal CF card. You can go up to 2 GB (and maybe more). If you have
another unit sitting around, duplicating the card from it is a quick and easy approach.

There also are image files out on the net. Just what’s there always a bit of an unknown . The Unavco
site is a good place to start looking.

https://www.unavco.org/

It also is a good resource for a whole range of info on various older GPS devices. Unfortunately
they do “clean things up” from time to time. That results in less information on some older models.

Since the card interface on the board is many decades old, you may have to try several
brands of card. Some seem to work and others don't. Once I switched to 2 GB
cards I had a lot less trouble. I suspect that part of the issue came from cards that had
some small amount less memory designed into them than the original target.

These devices have been out for a long time. Having a CF card go bad is pretty
normal. I’ve never had one do what you are describing. The more normal outcome
is for them to go into a perpetual reboot loop. The get part way into initialization, hit
a corrupted file and reboot.

Thanks so much for your help.

As for the hard reset, I did it, but in the end, NetRS goes into an
infinite loop. I have to stop it by pressing the tab bar and issuing the
clearnv command, followed by the reset command. Only then does it exit the
infinite loop, but then I can't get a static IP address to connect to with
the browser. I'll try all these steps again, but I doubt they'll work. My
impression at this point is that the CF card is damaged. There's an .img
file on the Unavco website, but I can't download it. Does anyone have a
copy or can download it? Can you provide one?

I used the standalone version of Avanced IP Scanner, and it finds the
router on my network, but not NetRS.

In the meantime, I'm trying to work on it.

Thank you so much, everyone, you're the best.

Thanks, Bob Camp

Hi

The “easy to find” firmware is the 1.3-2 firmware upgrade package. Since it is just an update, I do not believe it has all of what’s supposed to be on the CF. You need to dig a bit deeper and see if they still have the full card dumps somewhere on the site. There used to be two of them stashed away in odd places. The ones I’m aware of all seem to lead off to an FTP site that no longer exists.

I used the standalone version of Avanced IP Scanner, and it finds the router on my network, but not NetRS.

In the meantime, I'm trying to work on it.

Thank you so much, everyone, you're the best.

I wanted to know if there's a trick to fix the problem. I've already reset
it both from the power button and the serial port, including clearnv, then

For clarity, I'm sending you a Putty screenshot showing the situation.
To access the serial port, I used Putty. I also tried Termite on different

The “easy way” to deal with a NetRS is to go in through the web interface.
Log in to

Once that is changed, you will have to point your browser at the new

Hi The “easy to find” firmware is the 1.3-2 firmware upgrade package. Thank you all so much.
I can't download the .img file. I tried FileZilla, WinScp, and Sea Monkey.
Have any of you managed to download it? Is it still available?
As for the lithium battery, I don't know if it's inside, but I'll have to
open it to check.

Hi

The Trimble NetRS is a late 1990’s design. It does not have any sort of battery in it.
Pretty much everything is saved to a single CF memory card. All of the logged data
is written to that card.

The “big deal” of the NetRS is that it will lock to an external 10 MHz input. This lets
you log RINEX files that reflect the time derived from that clock. When the RINEX is
processed, you can extract local time information as a result.

They often got used as “base stations” for various sorts of GPS survey stuff. That
ment they might be logging files 24 hours a day for quite a while. Combine that
with the early CF technology.  It did not make for a “many decades” sort of reliability.
The cards die and need to be replaced.

The main downside is that they do not have a sawtooth corrected PPS output. They
also need an external “dongle” to be able to connect to ethernet. In some cases that dongle
sells for more than the NetRS. There is info out there to “roll your own” dongle.

Depending on which file you are trying to download from Unavco, there might be various
issues. The ones I looked at simply did not exist anymore. The link being used pointed
to a server that no longer exists. That’s not a big deal since the file I found would not be of any
help in this case.
