All,
I have an Ocean Alex. that has never had amp meters and I would like to know
what is involved and the best way to install them.
When y'all talk about the current that is charging your batteries, etc, etc, I
have no idea what my alternators are putting out. I do know that the original
owner put in very large alternators.
Can you offer some guidance on installation, best meters, easist approach
etc??
Thanks in advance,
Greg

Thanks in advance,
Greg,
One of the best devices out there is the Xantrex line of Link battery monitors
(http://www.xantrex.com/web/id/97/p/1/pt/7/product.asp).
These monitors will show you not only the instantaneous amp readings going
in/out of your batteries, they have a very sensitive voltage meter, and do some
very useful computations to show you how many amp hours have been used, and what
the current state of the battery banks is.
Adding a Link 20 to my boat was one of the best things I ever added. The manual
is on-line at Xantrex, so you can see the installation procedure there.

I just received an email stating that Powerboat Reports is going out of
business. The May issue will be their last.
They just took my money to continue my subscription 4 weeks ago.
Anyone know any more about this?
snip:
The May issue was the last issue of Powerboat Report, which, after 20
years, has ended its circulation. You will soon be receiving a letter
from Boating magazine regarding subscription fulfillment. Current
Powerboat Reports subscribers will receive at least two issues of
Boating magazine for every issue of Powerboat Reports they are due.
Boating will also be providing a toll-free telephone number for those
who have questions.

Damm shame. I wonder if their sister publication, Practical Sailor is going
away as well?

A study of the two web sites indicates that Powerboat Reports is no
longer active, but Practical Sailor is. If old subscribers to Powerboat
Reports are not given replacement subscriptions to Practical Sailor they
out to "scream bloody ....". Practical Sailor seems like a reasonable
substitute for Powerboat Reports even if it will not cover powerboats.
Of course much of the equipment is the same.

I think we'll have to wait and see what the fallout will be.
Thre's no menton on the Powerboat Reports website:
http://www.powerboat-reports.com/
But if you go to Belvoir Media Group website:
http://www.belvoir.com/sailing/index.html
Powerboat Reports is gone while Practical Sailor is still there. I always
found there was a lot of duplication, so if PBR is gone, I'd rather have my
remaining subscription moved to PS vice "Boating"

According to their websites Powerboat Reports is not accepting new
subscriptions but Pratical Sailor is accepting subscriptions. The
corporate site http://www.belvoir.com/ only lists Practical Sailor as a
current publication.
I would have thought that it would have made more sense to give current
subscribers issues of Practical Sailor since lots of tests are similar.

You are right. I sent an email to Powerboat Reports and asked them if I
could change to Practical Sailor but I have not heard back yet. In
PBR's email notification they said they are giving a subscription on a
1:2 ratio for Boating magazine.

Why not substitute Practical Sailor or are they out of business as well?
Instead of their too high subscription price, I suggested that they go to
online publishing only at a lower price.
