I find meshlab is a good all round STL viewer, it's very fast and powerful.
Otherwise you can download Meshmixer which is awesome too
and 123d design is awesome too, you should get all 3 if you are on pc they
are all free fast and powerful.

For a nice and simple STL viewer for Windows, there is STLView.

I have been using it for a while. Nothing flashy about it, but the
simplicity appeals to me. This one is no nonsense...
My next project might be to create a similar viewer, but add direct
support for AMF + make it cross platform to Linux. If I find the time...

I tend to use Meshlab Basic. It has sectional views and plenty of measuring
options, as well as general STL fixing, rotating and scaling.

For me in most cases kisslicer does a perfect job. It is not the fastest with
very large stls, but it finds and points out meshing problems automatically.

Oops, I said 'Meshlab Basic', but what I meant to say was 'Netfabb Basic'.
Netfabb https://www.netfabb.com/ (now owned by Autodesk) has been recently
updated so you just download the Netfabb Pro version, and have a 30-day
trial of the 'Pro' tools, before it reverts to the same Basic tools. This
still includes measuring and sectioning stls. Unfortunately, the latest
update is Windows only, they seem to have given up on the Mac version.

For just a fast, smooth viewer, no edit capabilities...

Indeed, that is nice viewer (I mentioned it before). I have been trying
to teach myself OpenGL to create something similar, only faster and with
built in AMF support, plus remembering some preferences. Still some way
to go, but getting there...

What I really want is something to do preview .stl's in the Windows (7)
Explorer preview pane.
Admin - PM me if you need anything, or if I've done something stupid...

I think there is a program that does that. I can't remember what it is
called though and I don't have it on this machine.

I finally found a program which shows STL's in the Windows 7 preview pane.
It can also be configured to be a STL viewer, ie double click to view.
The preview is static, the viewer has pan tilt & zoom (middle-drag,
right_drag, scroll).
It's OK as a basic viewer.
But I really wanted the preview. Finally.
See this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3dnWQg98EI4 for details.
