I have NO luck at all with harbor frieght tools. They really are an example
of getting what you pay for. Bill

Friends have purchased selected power tools for occasional use and have been
satisfied. I have only purchased two hand tools from them and they appear to
be well made. My email was to point out, gently, that the eBay offering was
a big gyp as they are selling the lower amperage one for the higher amperage
model's price. I suspect that the higher amperage unit will be OK for the
use we normally give these tools, BUT, I would buy the Fein blades for it as
I think the accessories look cheesy.

Just another viewpoint based on many years of experience
If you are smart/lucky you can get what you paid for, otherwise you get
less. Rarely if ever will you get more than you paid for.

How useful are the Multimasters (original and/or knock-off) at grinding the
crud off the boat's running gear? I want the prop & rudder nice and shiny
before I apply the new antifouling. Using a wire brush on a drill was a long
and painful experience.
Thanks,
Darrell

I'd suggest being careful of interchanging blades without looking into their construction. I noticed that the blades on one non-Fein multifunction tool, though it look alike, had a different seating design on the blades and wasn't, as far as my cursory look determined, interchangable with the original tool. Could be wrong, and hope so as those blades are so much less than the blades from Fein.

I have not used the Fein for this task but did use it to redo the teak cap
rail. It is the best sander of varnish I have ever used. Cap rail is as
new.

Bob, if the crud where you are is alot less tenacious than it is down here,
it'll probably work, but will probably still be time consuming.
If your crud, especially barnicles, are like they are around here, based on my
experience with my Fein tool, you'll probably have just as long and tedious
job using the Fein tool, or any of the knock offs as you did with your drill.
What, you didn't find that fun?
What you may want to consider using, unless you are sandblasting, is a 4 or
4.5 angle grinder with heavy grit (36 or less) grinding discs, or a composite
grinding disc.
This may not get into the tiny crevices, but they can be cleaned up with hand
tools, or the Fein tool. An excellent way to get the job done faster, but
still have a good excuse to buy the Fein tool.

Flap wheels are also useful in cleaning dry running gear. I use a painter's
tool and other hand scrapers.
