Would it be fun and helpful to vote a 1-2-3 rating of our favorite vendors
followed with a vote for the worst net gnat?
There are many non-stocking "Net gnats," offering low prices and practically
no service. In many cases they are one or two person enterprises, using
Flash pages with sometimes tens of thousands of items for sale, all of which are
drop-shipped.
Here are my votes:
Defender
Fishery Supply
Hamilton
Worst net gnat:
Boaters World

It's not easy for any company to
keep afloat and profitable in the present downturn. As a practical
matter it is probably not in the interest of any of us boaters to have
any of the major boat supply dealers go under or even be severally damaged.

Agree with your choices with a nod to BrokenLeg Dave who does use
drop-shipping, but is reliable and often the lowest price on electronics.
Boaters World and parent Ritz Camera have filed for bankruptcy - don't know
what kind.

For electronics, I would put in a vote for pyacht.com. Good prices
and very good service.
For north left coasters, Fisheries is the one! Join the rbaw:

or "start a small marine business" and their prices get even better.
Best,
Steve
I read in the Annapolis newspaper that Fawcetts has purchased PYacht.
They purchased Chesapeake Marine Fasteners last year. Both businesses
will operate under their own names. They went into bankruptcy a few
years ago but survived and seem to be doing well.

Hmmm, since Fawcett wasn't on my list of suppliers I decided to find their
site and snoop around a bit. Imagine my surprise when every link I chased
in the "Electrical" category ended in a "Web page can not be found" message.
I did some limited looking in other categories and got the same result.

Ed,
I had the same results with Fawcett's web page.
Another that I often have trouble with is BoatFix. They have a lot of
stuff but I can never find it on their web site, which often means I go over
to Defender's site and place the order.
I have been looking for the Lewis Supply and MESCO's site but they
appear to be strictly wholesale.

Hello & Good Morning:
FWIW...I think Paul is correct that Fawcett's is not known for online
shopping. However, my wife and I were by their store in Annapolis two weeks
ago and their prices were okay and their service was great. For example, I
purchased a Fortress FX-23 anchor. Their price was +/- $310. Since getting
home and checking on the internet, I found one store with a price of +/-
$290, plus shipping. All other internet stores I found ranged from $338 to
$360. We spent more than an hour just looking and their personal could not
have been more helpful...What a great store.
I wish we had a Fawcett's in our area !!
Just my two cents worth......

Fawcett's used to be nicknamed "Tiffany on the Bay". However, you could always find specials there reasonably priced. The good news is that WM is now so high that they make Fawcett's much better as far as prices go. Fawcett's has always been known for great customer service. Most of their staff are experienced boaters. When I would drive in from Tennessee, I would always stop there. They would greet me by name. Be sure to sign up for a Fawcett's customer account number. It gives you some discount (I think) and puts you on their mailing list for sales and seminars...

Hi Randy,
Here is a site that sells the FX-23 for $259.97, but as you point out
shipping would be added.
