Hi Magnus, I've never seen it in print either but I coined the name when I wrote my ADEV tools. I've found a profound difference in the overlapping form of ADEV in many cases and so I use it a lot now -- especially when analyzing the effect of tides on precision pendulum clocks, or other periodic effects, such as cycling A/C or diurnal effects.

OK, after dropping the amount of coin on the mount, scope, and camera, (my guess in the neighborhood of $40,000 US) a few hundred bucks for a timing solution shouldn't be too bad. Would an external NTP box, perhaps a Soekris Net4501 driven by a Thunderbolt or another GPS receiver with PPS work?

The rubidiums may also run for a long time, or they may die 5 or 10 years from now due to lamp wear out. Lots to think about. BTW: my unit used to reset itself all the time also. It was impossible to get measurements longer than a couple of days. After I got many hardware error warnings on the screen, Symmetricom fixed it after several attempts by replacing the AT processor board, and updating the flash firmware... Also, I had one flash drive die on me as well..
