TWL: Mac Navigation Software
Thu, Mar 13, 2003 2:16 PM
My wife has, for various software related reasons, a Microsloth Windoze machine which crashes more than all the others combined. When I get a Powerbook for navigation, I will also be running all the other software I use and won't be concerned about routine crashes. Rick Quarles Barric II, Nordic Tug 32-147 New Bern, NC

Re: [time-nuts] Suggestion for a timing GPS receiver (Trimble / Ublox / other?)
Fri, Jan 26, 2018 8:57 PM
Still, they're true timing receivers with sawtooth correction, are easy to power with 5V, output TTL serial (so a MAX(3)232 can easily convert the data to RS-232 polarity) and a PPS signal, and are well-supported by NTPd. The Oncore driver for NTPd is a bit chatty in terms of what it logs every second, but that's easy enough to deal with.

I don't represent that all the above is essential but it sure made for comfortable cruising with all the creature comforts of home and more. Joe & Myra Chernow , retired (plus boat dog and boat cat) MV Liquidity (Now in Singapore having visited Taiwan to inspect new boat before shipment)

TWL: Bernoulli effect is not why wings fly
Fri, Aug 15, 2003 6:24 AM
This is also >the same thing that makes an airplance fly and is applicable to all fluids. While this is the most popular reason given as to why an airplane flies (it's easy to understand) the Bernoulli principle actually has very little to do with why a wing flies. A wing flies because it pushes air down. It flies for the action-reaction reason.

All chain rode scope question
Wed, Aug 30, 2006 2:52 AM
I have personally dove on an all rode chain in winds above hurricane force and can confirm that the chain was bar tight, and sighting it, (clear water in the tropics) there was absolutely no sag. The Kelet would make no difference in hurricane force winds. Tanden anchors might--But do it right.
