Chester, 9/26: red-tailed and red-shouldered hawks

Chester, 9/26: Pair of red-tailed hawks soaring just above the treetops this morning, stunning against the bright blue sky. They were soundly scolded by a red-shouldered hawk when they flew a little too far over the east woods (red-shouldered territory). - Tammy Eustis, Chester

[Ontbirds] Juvenile Plegadis ibis Port Hope Nov.26

A Plegadis ibis, likely a Glossy, is feeding in the A.K.Sculthorpe (aka Lake Street) marsh in Port Hope today, Saturday Nov.26. Its crown still has white streaking, suggesting a juvenile, eye chestnut brown, head very dark with thin whitish line above and below lores. Bill and legs dark greenish gray.

With a bit of extra effort and time, 80 species would not be out of the question. Among the waterfowl currently present are hundreds of Canada Geese, close to a dozen Wood Ducks, half a dozen Gadwalls, and a few Redheads and scaup. On June 24, there were four American Wigeons on Owen Point.

Black-backed Woodpecker: There was one in the Wolf Howl Pond area this week, and one was heard calling near the Jake Lake parking lot on November 26. As always, we would appreciate receiving your observations for our Visitor Centre records. Good birding.
