Doulos I Update: Engine Selection

Other top objectives were that we wanted to have easy in frame maintenance and repairs, we wanted parts and service to be easily available, and we wanted to maximize the full intermittent power rating of the engine. All these got either an eight or a nine, in comparison to the one that we called a ten. Less important objectives all got a five or a six.

They all face the same cast iron fuel tank issues that most boats of that vintage face, although I know of at least one with fiberglass tanks. Many have been refitted with new tanks, generally aluminum. We like our Manatee better in several regards.

The engine is a 1997 all-electronic turbocharged, aftercooled, and supercharged 3.6 liter 260 hp Volvo KAD44 with duo-prop I/O. It currently has 3100 hours, and runs like a top.
