Sunken Outboard
Tue, Nov 13, 2007 1:50 PM
I can run the boat at 5600 rpm smoothly but coming down through about around 1200 rpm, it starts to snort and eventually backfire and die. Sounds kinda like the timing's out. Don't know if some critical electronic part got wet and ruined or if some orifice in the carburetor has water trapped in it. Any ideas?

If it were to fail and shut off the fuel the engine would die. I don't know what the possible failure modes are of this part. The scale for this part is: 1.2 to 12 gallons per hour. It is the smallest unit that I am aware that THEY carry. I have thought for some years that this might be an excellent solution for engines that return very little fuel.

I thought this was fine until its CRT screen started to die and we installed the Furuno. Now I would not want to be without the ability to shorten the range to a quarter mile, a feature I would think would be a requirement on any radar used a vessel in a river. ______________________________ C. I'm sure that the dies are different, but assuming that the die numbers are cross sectional area in mm; I'm having trouble matching these sizes to regularly used American wire sizes. I've allowed room for insulated terminals and only a few seem to work out. If these dies are useful, your idea is a generous one.

Because of this, I always clean up the threads by running a thread die down them before I screw them in. As long as I've gone that far, I'll clean up the threads in the plug with a thread tap also. So far, all of the threads that I've run into are standard, coarse US threads, though there are some metric out there.

A chemistry lesson

This uses your precious fresh water but doesnbt form salts (no calcium) and as importantly doesnbt bring sea critters in who can die and stink. Flushing a cupful of vinegar once a week (I think that is what Peggie recommends) allows a weak acid solution to sit in the hoses. This acid reacts with the calcium salt and resolublizes it.

Since I enjoy the work, I usually cut the threads myself using the appropriate sized die- available from just about any hardware store or tool supplier.
