TWL: Decrepit Genset:What to do?
Fri, Nov 1, 2002 12:46 PM
Although you may not NEED a genset regularly, they are a "necessity" on those occassions where your electrical usage exceeds your expectations, such as accidently leaving some device operating and you batteries "die". Or a malfunctioning device such as a frig thermostat which does not shut off as expected.

TWL: Environmental stuff
Wed, Dec 4, 2002 1:38 AM
Well, I just gotta jump in here now, since this won't die on it's own. It's such a complex topic, and of course we're all "for" keeping the environment clean. The problem is that most government actions/regulations don't look at the entire system, and just address a specific concern, usually political rather than environmental.

Re: TWL: Air on board

My contribution: You can't use it for SCUBA, unless you want to die. Too much oil vapor in the air. You have to have a compressor specifically designed either to supply air directly to the regulator, or to fill tanks for that.

TWL: RE: Celestial navigation

Larry Z writes: "But what if the batteries die?" the mossbacks exclaim. They obviously have forgotten how much paraphernalia it takes to navigate with a sextant. You need 20 lbs. of current books and tables, a chronometer, and a very sharp pencil and pad of paper or calculating sheets. You also need the sky to be clear and a steady hand.

TWL: A bit off-topic, but...

About the third fishing hole, had a real hard time getting the engine going again and if I went to idle for more than a second, it would die. Voltage was below 11. Time to head to the ramp! Man, I've hand cranked a few small diesels that were easier to start! The 30 amp fuse on the starboard side of engine is fine.

Cinderella's adventures

At least it was Apalachiacola where the fried oysters and scollops at Papa Joe's Oyster Bar at Scipio creek Marina are to die for! In Panama City, or north of there in Southport we spent two nights with the new owners of First Forty, Pete and Claire Mallory and their neighbor, Rich Gano! It's such fun to meet people I've 'met' on these lists.

Onan solenoid problem
Mon, Jan 10, 2005 5:12 AM
Bingo, ran like a champ, but let go the throttle and it would die. To make a long story short, it is the stop solenoid. But, troubleshooting the solenoid revealed that it is not receiving proper power. Initially it is getting 6.8 volts when the start button is hit, but as soon as the start button is released it is getting no power.

Charter captain indicted for manslaughter

There seem to be two types of people who die on the bar -- the extreme novices ("Which side of the bar are the red crab floats on?") and people with too much experience. You can make it through the bar in dangerous conditions by luck often enough to become contemptuous of the real danger.
