Hot switching is to be avoided at all costs. Some top of the line amplifiers do use PIN diodes too but they are not very tolerant of higher than 2:1 SWR's. In the heat of action it is easy to select the wrong antenna or put the amp in a >2:1 SWR situation. Their replacement costs are $100 and up and more than one are used.

FCC Maritime Update
Thu, Feb 21, 2008 5:32 PM
Application for new licenses, renewals, updates and replying to an audit can all be done online. FCC stuff at the FCC website or EPIRB registrations and updates at SarSat. You will need an FRN with password to go online with the FCC. Website access makes all of this license stuff real easy to take care of.
