[Ontbirds] Point Pelee National Park Migration Report -Saturday, May 10, 2014
Sat, May 10, 2014 3:43 PM
Point Pelee NP Migration Report for May 10. Quite a few new migrants have arrived again today. So far birding was the best from the Tip up to Shuster Trail along the east beach. Birds were bug-hunting high and low in the brush along the beach. At least 20+ species of warbler are being seen.

And by the way, the technician said that all of the components in the board were of a very high quality - MIL spec stuff. Bob Chateau de Mer

There are cleaners and polishes and combinations of each All work well and there is a Mil Spec. that some comply with. After I polish with a soft cloth I buff the panel using a oscillating automotive buffer. Sounds like a lot of work but they stay cleaner longer. Since I shrink wrap the boat the panels are taken down each year.

The level of accuracy I grew up with (very spoiled I was) was better than 1 mil (25 um). I'm constantly haggling with my 3D printer service provider to squeeze more accuracy out of them. But 25 um on parts of typically 5-50cm is only 50ppm, and that's about the limit of a 20+ yr veteran machinist with a multi-millions dollar shop.

It has a lot to do with MIL 1553B stuff. PS Pasternack has an amusing reputation around our telescopes - their SMA adapters fall apart when looked at sideways, so we generally just toss 'em when we run into them. PPS Look at the Pasternack website with any browser but IE, and the text in the menus doesn't render at all!

Hal, The old standby is MIL-HDBK-217F: http://assist.daps.dla.mil/quicksearch/basic_profile.cfm?ident_number=53939 It is quaint, but they based it on years of experience. They did a lot of testing of the chips and created mathematical models that worked as well as any model can, given the clumpiness of failures.

Mil grade just makes sure they qualify a change. At the time we had the issues the volume on the transistors was quite high. The cost os screening was still prohibitive. They write the specs with very few limits for a reason....

Re: [time-nuts] optically excite a quartz crystal?

In fact, post WWII, when many ham transmitters were 'rock bound' (ie: crystal conteolled) it was common pratice to regrind mil surplus rystals to move them into the ham banda. Apparently, some were also etched using a cleanser called Whink, which contains a flourine compound.
