Mike,
I think most people pick Delaware because it is better known as a great place to incorporate and because it is close to the population centers of the east coast.
Montana is easy to incorporate and easy to maintain. $70 to incorporate and $15 per year to keep up. No need to do the LLC; it's easier to do a full blown incorporation, then get a fed tax id number at irs.gov and then from the same site get the form to file for an S corp and be taxed as a partnership (which with one shareholder makes the tax consequences the same as a sole propritorship). A registered agent in Montana is $85 per year.
Why do you think Delaware is better for a boater?
In Montana it costs $306.50 to register a boat over 26 feet and the cost to renew every 3 years is zero, That's ZERO.
Oh well different strokes for different folks.
Henry

Henry,
I looked this over and the value added services may be worth the extra
money.
The biggest problem is setting up the LLC. You can do it yourself, but
then it requires maintenance. It's basically a trade off between whether
you you would rather spend the money or spend the time.
The bigger questions revolves around selecting the best state to call
home. Montana has some advantages, but Delaware may be the better deal
for a boater.
I have been over this problem domain quite a bit, it is no magic that a
lot of people pick Delaware.
