There have been several men in their mid 70's who have circumnavigated.
Minoru Saito is at it again at age 75 I believe on his 8th circumnavigation
(he has set a number of records in his life). I know of 80 year olds who have
made passages with at only one crew.
I was privledged to see Harry Pidgeon (second solo circumnavigator) off on the
start of his 3rd circumnavigation (with his wife aboard this time) in 1947.
At that time he was 78 years old. Unfortunately they lost the boat in harbor
in the New Hebrides during a typhoon. He treturned to Calif. and built a
smaller similar boat which he sailed until he died at age 85. He was my
inspiration for voyaging. I remember him as old, about the same age as my
grandfather, but very fit.
I agree it is the health issues, not the age which matters. In a power boat,
there is less physical demand, so I think we can see a fit 80+ year old
circumnavigating (won't be me--I am not fit because of back and cardiac
disease--plus I am not yet 80)
