I am a TWL list lurker from Ireland, who has been enjoying all the discussions
from the sidelines. I have a C & L 44 trawler that now needs its first
varnishing since I became her owner.
My thoughts were firmly on Bristol Finish because of its advertised ability to
take multiple coats within one day, which is particularly attractive when you
live in a climate such as ours in Ireland, where prolonged sunny/dry spells
are like "hens teeth" i.e. rather rare.
Picture then my dismay on reading some recent views on Bristol Finish which
seem to place it top of the blister league, and not the trawler owners best
friend.
Are the two recent "anti-Bristol" contributions just two unfortunate
experiences, and are there any contrary views from listees who like the
product.
Is this really a worthwhile product, or would I be better sticking to one of
the other top brand varnishes, where I have to plan on just one coat per
day.(brightwork to be completed by the year 2010 !!!)
Mayday! Mayday! Mayday!

Recall that the report on Bristol Finish was that the coat applied after 6PM
was the one that fogged/blistered in the morning. This would happen with
many finishes if the dew point dropped significantly before the product had
'done its chemical thing' to become moisture resistant.
The story also said that the earlier coats had gone down well.

I have used the product and will use it again. It is easy to use and works as
described if you follow directions. Dew or even rain settling while it is
curing will cause a blush. A light sanding before the next coat takes care of
it. Normally, sanding between coats is not required with this product.
Another benefit.
