Captain Jacks is now unloading what is left in inventory for 75%
off. There is a seriously good price on the "Last Call." This is an
extension speaker for your VHF that records and can replay the last
30 seconds or so of a transmission (Ideal for when the weather person
finally gets to the good part and you miss it because you are spaced
out from listening to the buoy reports.)
This is a rather dubious buy at its regular price ($110!):
but, at the $18.75 that Captn Jacks is charging, it is well worth the money.

Ideal for when the weather person finally gets
to the good part and you miss it because you
are spaced out from listening to the buoy reports.
Or even worse...you're waiting until they get past that part about the
number of degree-days experienced last month.
I honestly haven't listened to the VHF weather channels in about 3 years.
It's one of the huge advantages of having a smartphone - one favorite away
and a couple of location selections gives me the text of ONLY the marine
forecast for a particular area. There's no waiting around for it and you
get to see the text (...did they say the winds were going to be North or
East tomorrow?).
NOAA has quick text version of all their forecasts. No graphics or fluff -
just the text.
Get to it from:
http://www.nws.noaa.gov/om/marine/marinewxi.htm
Click "Bay and Coastal" next.
Select your area.
Voila...

If you have a decent connection to the internet, this site works well -
gives you a graphical interface to the section of the coast you're
interested in, and then the text forecast (unfortunately with some HTML
formatting). I find this easier to use than combing through the text
forecasts until I get to the right area.

Bob's right - there is a full graphical interface web-based interface
available for NOAA marine weather too but it sort of requires a laptop.
There are huge advantages to waking up in the morning, rolling over and
checking the forecast on your phone while still in bed. Then you can decide
whether to get up or go back to sleep. Same thing when you're off the boat
exploring an onshore area. You tend to figure out when the new forecasts
come out and learn to check them around the time that new data appears. No
booting a computer and nearly zero time-to-see-the-forecast.

And bookmarking the local animated weather radar on the phone helps you to
know when to head back to the boat let out more scope and button
up...especially this time of year on the Chesapeake!

although many phones dont let you bookmark long URLs and often radar urls
are pretty long with a bunch of variables.
if you have a website you can upload stuff to, you can easily create a
mobile home page with essential links like radars and marine weather...
http://site.mobi/ is an easy way to write a simple page (s) that will be
compatible with cel phone browsers.
