I also started using the ratchet crimper -- the key to success in my case
was remembering which way to insert the connector into the crimper. I
believe mine is an Ancor (on the boat) and like Phil said, it makes two
crimps at once, one on the metal wire ferrule and one on the insulation --
the crimps are different -- so it is important to insert the connector in
the crimper correctly.

Also, a good way to jam the crimper is to place a too-large connector in the
wrong die. If you cannot COMPLETELY close the crimper, the blue-handled
Ancor I own will jam and require disassembly - you do not want to "try this
at home!"

Last Fall when I started all of the upgrades to our Albin, I bought a pair
of the Anchor blue handled ratchet crimpers along lith the "hammer" type for
the larger wires & a pair of "Ideal" brand wire strippers. I'm VERY happy so
far with all, although I've been a little uncomfortable with the hammer type
& have only had to use it once. My neighbor, Jim, has a good pair of the big
crimpers that I used most of the time on the inverter project.
I've noticed a couple of comments about the Anchor crimpers jamming. Mine
has a small lever on the inside of the handles that will release the ratchet
in case of a jam. It's not a very obvious lever & I just stumbled on it by
accident. I would be surprised if they don't all have this feature. You
might look at yours.

You are right. Mine does have the lever, however, my jams could not be
released in this manner, even using a slot head screwdriver to pry.
