Hi all

Wondering if folks might have some recommendations on all chain
windlass's for a Cape Dory 28 Flybridge

A small foot print or cut out, perhaps 7" or less is what I'm hoping
for (to install it infront of the anchor locker which is right at the
tip of the bow)

Thanks

Stick with the good brands. Lofrans, Maxwell, and Muir. If Ideal or
Lighthouse make a small windlass, by all means look at those two brands.

My buddies replaced a failing SL 600 with a Lofrans Dorado on their 28'
boat, and thought it was great.  Robust and small, but slow.  They often
lowered the anchor by hand in free-fall rather than under power.

What is the most common cause for excessive white smoke from a Lehman??  I
believe it is unburned fuel, but what is the cause -- compression,
injectors, or??

Hi Bill

Before you panic, if it's just for a couple of minutes on start-up, it's
probably accumulated condensation and nothing to worry about.

If it is the possibility Arild suggested, i.e. coolant mixing with fuel,
that is serious. Check your crankcase oil. It it's the colour of coffee and
creamy in texture, that is, indeed, your problem, and it's most unwelcome.
The potential sources are several, all of which require immediate attantion,
and range from a blown head gasket - pray that this is all it is - to a
blown turbocharger, cracked head or engine block, etc., etc.

Good luck, Garrett

My nissan diesel ended up with a fouled injector that dribbled.
Result;  clouds of white smoke when I started up. Especailly when the engine
was cold.

I too was told all about  the possible and terribely expensive  solutions.

Being a DIY guy I first pulled the injectors. One in particular looked
really coked up with carbon.
So I cleaned them. CAREFULLY!!  not just with a wire wheel on a grinder.

I soaked them in the carb cleaner and then dismantled them. I use a soft
brass wire brush with a dremel.
Then I reassembled the injectors.  Reading the service manual I noted that a
specif torque was called for.
That made sense since that compressed the spring that set the pop off
pressure.

I calibrated my torque wrench. Known weight a measured distance from fulcrum
etc.

Result.
Perfectly matched injectors. I dropped them off at a service shop I knew and
asked them to check the injectors for pop-off pressuer.
The shop said this was as good as any they had seem from the normal rebuild
shops.

From what I have seen of Lehman injectors they are quite similar to the one

on my Nissan engine.

regards
Arild

What about the water injection at the exaust elbow. Mixes water and exaust. Blue smoke is oil. Black smoke is unburned fuel. White mist is moisture, like steam. White smoke is most likely coolant aka anti freeze. This you should be able to smell. I can.

One other thing. Steam dissipates very quickly, white smoke tends to linger
a bit.
