HANJI:
ANCIENT KOREAN PAPER MAKING TRADITION
Paper manufacturing process of Korea has distinctive characteristics from other countries in usage of raw material and method of skimming paper from pulp, and developing them. Hanji, by using elongated fiber from mulberry bark, has a flexible yet very tough nature. Such flexibility and toughness become the basic property in composing clothes.
Hanji Fashion has been holding regular fashion shows domestically since 1998 and was invited and hosted fashion shows and exhibitions in over 10 countries from countries as close as China and Japan, and as far as Europe and America with good reviews.
Hanji Fashion until now has been developing in terms of art and experiment. but with the development of Hanji fabric that uses Hanji paper yarn, it has become possible to solve Hanji's weak points such as laundry and fastness. and add characteristics such as quick-drying and antibiosis for further development as functional fashion such as underwear and socks.
This Fashion show will tell the expressiveness of fabric texture of Hanji through clothes. Hanji, in the composition of clothes. has property between paper and traditional clothes materials. and such property is the background for enhancing surface texture of Hanji clothes. Hanji transforms by water, has nature of felt that's easily dyed, is unrestricted in color expression. and cutting plane does not come undone even when cut. so Hanji can create Hanji's unique decorative yet fantastic surface effect
Through such process. this Fashion show hopes to show that Hanji material can procure its own area and that it's not a replacement for existing materials such as cotton and silk in fields of fashion. Hanji shroud that has already been commercialized is not effected by laundry, yet it is a product that applied Hanji's combustibility and biodegradability, and esthetic Hanji wedding dresses are a field with high expectation for development.
Hanji is a traditional paper of Korea. and a fruit of traditional culture. Hanji clothes using such material not only enriches Korea's clothes culture. but is hoped to be an item of securing the uniqueness of Korean dress code among international society.
Through this Fashion show, we hope that many find this as an opportunity to enjoy Korea's traditional culture. This event is held in celebration of 35th anniversary of the sister-city affiliation between USA's Tacoma city and Korea's Gunsan city.
Thanking both Tacoma and Gunsan city for their invitation and support. I hope friendship of these two cities lasts forever.
