Thanks for all the help . As a follow-up, I checked on the batteries
yesterday and they were charged to 12 volts but when subjected to a load
test, all 4 batteries failed fairly quickly. So now I am in the process of
replacing them as many of you suggested. I needed the battery charger
anyway. Thanks

Just before you do that, read the following from the Trawler List.
Perhaps you already know of it though.

  1. There is a product called Battery Equaliser on the market.  You
    add one
ounce per cell to your batteries and it will de-sulfate the plates.
    Takes
about 3 to 5 charge/discharge cycles for it to do its job.  Results :
    It
works, I have two banks of batteries, one is quite old (7 or 8 years)
    and
since adding this product batteries take higher charge, hold the
    charge
longer and take less time to recharge.  Great stuff in my opinion.
    You can
contact them at:  Battery Equaliser USA LLC  phone is (888) 851-4331.
    They
also have a web site at www.batteryequaliser.com.
    //www.batteryequaliser.com/The site is quite complete
and gives more than you really want to know.  I reccomend the product
    because
I have and am using it and it works as advertised.
