Rudy and Jill- I don't know about fuel docks in Florida but here in MD they
all have signs warning NOT to spray detergent if there is any fuel spilled
when filling tanks.
Responce:
That is respresentative of many other posts that we've received.
Okay, I call Uncle. After receiving X number of responses, I'd better explain.
I was making a joke. As I explained to another member, as Jill often tells me,
"if I want folks to laugh at my humor, it would be best if it was".
It's nice seeing how many environmentally friendly folks are out there; Now
that's refreshing!

Okay, so no Joy in the water. If not Joy then what? Its very difficult not
to get a little fuel in the water, I suspect the most careful of us have
done it. I'm sure Rudy has figured out some way to have Jill take care of
the problem, but for those of us who travel with mere mortals what can we do
about the dribbles that hit the water? I've tried a straw, but it won't
reach.

This is from a Boat US brochure:
"Its also illegal for marina operators or boaters to treat a
sheen by putting anything on it that will disperse, emulsify or
coagulate it. This includes detergents. Current USCG penalties
for spilling, or not reporting, or treating a sheen go up to
$32,500. Even if you are not on waters with USCG jurisdiction,
you are subject to a similar state law."

Bottom line is they want you to use absorbents.

I was listening to a spill expert and an oceanographer. They say that dish
washing liquid (one referred to Dawn) causes oil to go straight to the
bottom, which is bad. Our #2 diesel can and will evaporate on the surface in
the Summer.
Dispersant breaks crude up into small droplets which are cosmetically
acceptable, but ruin the ocean "column" to a depth of 300 feet. This kills
all the krill and plankton and the animals which feed upon them either die
or go elsewhere - mostly elsewhere. The Gulf is one of two locations,
worldwide, for the breeding of Blue Fin Tuna - already in danger of being
"fished-out."
