Dear IMLA University Cities Colleagues:

It is with great sadness that I inform this group of the passing of former Madison City Attorney Mike May.  Our condolences go out to Mike's family, his colleagues in Madison, and all of you who knew and cared for Mike.  Mike's successor, Michael Haas wanted to pass along this message to Mike May's IMLA colleagues:

Mike had a great impact on the Madison community as a lawyer and during his 16 years as City Attorney which ended with his retirement in May of 2020.  He had a passion for public service and his colleagues and the City benefitted from his wise and steady leadership and mentorship.  He helped to shape the legal careers and skills of countless attorneys and the principles he championed continue to have an influence on the City Attorney's Office.  As he often said, he loved the law and he enjoyed wrestling with the nuances of the law and providing the best counsel and service possible to the City and its officials and staff.  He also greatly enjoyed and appreciated his interactions with his municipal attorney colleagues across Wisconsin and the country.  Up until his illness struck a month ago, Mike was working with at a Madison law firm and assisting the City of Madison with tax assessment litigation.  We will all miss not only his expertise and energy but also his optimism and great sense of amusement and humor about municipal law, the Wisconsin Badgers and life in general.    Mike's untimely passing will be felt in Madison and in the municipal law community throughout Wisconsin.

This article from Madison.com about Mike's passing highlights his love of the law and serving his City, something that I'm sure many of you can relate to.  https://madison.com/news/local/govt-and-politics/longtime-madison-city-attorney-mike-may-dies/article_1010c32a-fc0b-5a1f-a379-7b75978f861f.html

We are very sorry for your loss.
